garbage disposal

hi,
my badger disposal is doing something like what i'm reading but nothing fixes it. Its hums when turned on but doesn't spin, then shuts off and can be reset with button on bottom. The things turns freely from below when i use the allen wrench, so its not apparently blocked. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem as Mary who started this thread. One of the blades won't move. the plate itself turns fine, and the allen wrench thing didn't do anything because it was already turning fine. How do I unstick the blade? It's stuck like 180 degrees from the way they usually sit in the unit.

I accidentally got a bone (about 2 1/2 in. long) jammed in my garbage disposal. I've tried to pull it out with pliers but it's too deeply set in there for me to get a good grip on it to pull it out. Is there anyway to get it unstuck without having to pay lots of money and call a repair person?

I have a similar problem. I have disconnected the pipes. all are clear. Turn the water on and the disposal fills with water and does not drain. I turn the disposal on and the water just swirls but never releases. I shut off the disposal, disconnect the pipes again obviously with a bucket under the trap and all the water drains.
I then left the pipes disconnect and just turned on the water and it drains directly into the bucket through the disposal.
Check the pipes again and all clear. I even ran a snake down the pipe a good 10 feet.
When I reconnect the trap to the disposal once again the water never drains.
Anyone have any ideas ??

If the Disposal won't drain then you either have a blockage in the lower part of the disposal(drain chamber) or (usually) the drain line from the Disposal is blocked.

If you have a double sink then the pipe from the Disposal to the drainer side is blocked. The pipe can be cleaned out with a sink plunger.

Try this:
1 Remove the Dishwasher vent cover (the chrome or gold plug on the sink top) to expose the plastic vent, cover this with a latex glove and replace the cover.
2 Plug the drainer side of the sink with either the stopper or wet rags held in place.
3 Quarter fill the Disposal side of the sink with water. Now get your plunger ready, next flip the Disposal on and use the plunger to pump like crazy. The combined efforts of the suction from the Disposal and the plunger is usually enough to break the blockege in the drain pipe. Don't panic if the latex glove on the Dishwasher vent starts to "breathe" in time with the plunges.

If this clears the pipe, well done, don't forget to run water down the Disposal for at least 30 seconds to flush away the debris.

If it's still blocked you with have to remove the drain pipe and manually unblock it sometimes the connector from the Disposal pipe to the main drain gets blocked remember to check there as well. I've been an Maintenance Manager for several years and I've never seen a blocked Disposal drain chamber, it's usually in the pipework.

I tried using an allen wrench in the receptacle at the bottom of my humming Badger1 unit, and had the thing working in a minute. I then discovered that a foreign bolt had somehow dropped into the drain causing the jam. I would have spent this entire evening disassembling the unit had I not come across your tip through a quick search for help on the internet. THANKS!!!

Thanks for the solid advice here. Mine was humming and then shutting off. Turns out one of my blades was jammed and I needed to keep working it to remove the grime in its path. First, I budged it and thought it would do the rest when powered on. Not the case. Both blades need to swing freely, like, just tapping it will result in a 360. Once it was that loose, I hit reset, let some water run and then flipped it on. Thanks everyone, hope this helps-

hi all.

my insinkerator stopped working. there in no noise and no activity. there was no (reported) strain on the system. I have checked the outlet and wall switch -- both are working.

Is there a reset on the badger unit itself??

Any help would be appreciated.

Well I just saved my mom alot of money. I am 16, used the allen wrench method and bingo it was fixed. I am not the kind that can fix much. My mo was thrilled. Thanks Alot! CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES COME ON

I have a Badger 1 which stopped working this morning. After reading the entries below I have tried the reset button (to no avail) and using an Allen wrench on the bottom of the unit. The Allen wrench does not turn easily. Should I continue turning the Allen wrench to see if loosen's up. It just humms when I attempt to turn the unit on.

Thanks for the tip. The disposal hasn't worked all week and a large allen wrench fixed it -- I found the forum looking service. Badger should pay money to this site for saving them from store returns!

I have the same problem with my garbage disposal. There is a little
plastic thingy stuck. The garbage disposal runs but it makes a lot of
noise. Any ideas as to how remove the thing stuck inside. I tried a
pliers but I cannot get a good grip.

Please advise.

Sorry if i've missed a post on this topic, but my badger disposal 5 seems to be leaking at the seam between the top and bottom halves of the unit. i'm set to take it out and take it apart unless its pointless. probably will anyway though.
thoughts?
