  • Whirlpool side by side very hot

I have a whirlpool model ED25DQ side-by-side that seems to be working fine however the metal strip that runs the length of the fridge where the doors seal in the middle is very very hot to the touch. Any clues to what causes this and how to fix?

A plugged condenser beneath the fridge or an inoperative condenser fan motor.

Clean the condenser coils (which should be done several times a year anyway - more often if you have pets) or find the reason the fan is not working properly and correct it.

BTW. The rear compressor cover needs to stay in place for proper operation. Do not remove it thinking you'll be giving the appliance more air to cool with.

    JFYI

You stated that the refrigerator is working fine but the surface of the center divider between the refriderator and freezer seems to feel hot.

Do not be alarmed, it is intended to be so. Inside the housing of all freezers there is a low wattage electric heat strip called a "Mullion Heater" that is intended to keep the frame of the freezer door warm.

If that heater were not there the moisture in the air would condense on the door frame and freeze, thus causing the door to stick shut or perhaps even cause severe damage to the vinyl door gasket.

It is so hot that it is melting the seal strip on the door. This cant be normal. Could the heater be malfunctioning?

Some of the newer models have a thermostat control to operate the mullion heaters. It sounds as if your machine may have on that is stuck in the on position.

It would really require an appliance tech to change it out becuase you need to remove the inner cabinet liner and it is very easy to damage the liner if you do not know the specific procedure.

Most newer refrigerator (within the last 15+ years) use part of the refrigeration system's condenser loop to heat the mullion between the doors and the yoder around the front perimeter of the fridge cabinet instead of electric heaters. If the rest of the condenser (beneath the fridge) can not do its job (eg. because it is plugged or its fan is not working), the refrigeration system pushes excessive heat to those areas to try to get rid of it which results in those areas getting much hotter then normal.

Did you check the fridge's condenser and its fan motor (by the compressor) to make sure they are in proper working order?? One of those is likely your problem.
