  • Dishwasher motor failed - how to drain water

    Hello,

I have a mid-80s Whirlpool dishwasher that failed
last night. Motor is burned out.

The problem is there is some standing water remaining.
How can I drain the water when the motor is shot?

    Thank you,
    John Baker

The simplest method is to grab the shop vac and suck it out through the sump from inside.

You can also disconnect the drain line, then gravity flow as much as possible into a container. Once that is done keep the drain line elevated to trap the water while you pull the dishwasher and carry it outside to replace the motor.

      Thanks!
I'm not quite ready to pull it out

      guess now I have a reason to buy a shop-vac :-)

Well, since a new dishwasher can be had for less than the cost of a ShopVac, I would get out some sponges!

Seriously, I hope that you are not considering repairing a 20 year old dishwasher! This is not a prudent expenditure of time or money.

Besides purchasing a Shop Vac or using a siphon/gravity drain method (which might not be able to clear the whole sump of water), there are inexpensive pump attachments available which connect to a regular drill that can be used for small jobs. (assuming you have a drill handy )
