HELP! We moved into a brand new house and the disposel has always made a sound like something metal was in it whenever we turned it on. Now the sink is beginning to smell. HELP PLEASE!
The odor you are smelling is being caused by bits of solid waste from dishwater or food prep that is caught in the disposal.
The first step to correct your problem is to locate and remove the foreign object that is jamming your disposal. If you schroll down you will see numerous posts on Badger 5's or disposals that discuss how to free a stuck disposal.
Once you have the disposal free begin by running the disposal and dropping ice cubes in it. Running ice cubes through a disposal will clean the cutters. In fact, you should run a dozen or so ice cubes through a disposal about once a week as a preventative maintenance procedure.
Once you have the disposal working and you have run some ice cubes throught it, you may want to pour some baking soda in it and let it set overnite, then run the disposal with water flow to rinse the baking soda out.
Basically the best way to keep a disposal working good and keep it odor free is to use it often. It should be run at least once a day.
If you wash dishes by hand it is imporant that you run the disposal a bit while draining the dishwater to insure an solid food particles in the dishwater will go down the drain and not stick in the disposal.

There is also a commercial cleaner which can be used (see the following link). It appearently bubbles like denture cleaner Efferdent® to thoroughly clean surfaces.
