  • Cooktop vent question

In middle of kitchen remodel. Old cooktop vent is only 4", want to put at least 6" in. Basement ceiling under kitchen is finished but can get to space under island through a can light. 9' run to outside.

    Questions:
    1. is 6" adequate (I'm limited on space, have to pull old vent from outside the house, enlarge the hole, push new vent in, connect 90 and upright through can light)?

    2. What is avialable for a vent cap on the outside of the house--need spring flapper or other means to keep closed when not in use?

    3. Didn't see anything at Home Depot or Lowes, where can I buy what I need?

    4. Putting in Fisher-Paykel cooktop with 36" Wolf downdraft (motor in the unit as opposed to remote). What transition venting is available (I believe it's a 3 1/4 x 10" opening on the vent)? Saw transition from this dimension to 6" round but it may be too tall. What size ranges are available? If nothing, how do I fabricate?

Thanks in advance for the help.

** Old cooktop vent is only 4", want to put at least 6" in. **

You mean a kitchen exhaust vent duct work is only 4" diameter and you would like to install 6" diameter duct work?

    ** 1. is 6" adequate **

That would depend on the total length, number of bends/elbows, the type of material being used and the model vent being installed. Check the exhaust vent's installation instructions for what is required for it. The requirements should be clearly smelled out.

** 2. What is available for a vent cap on the outside of the house **

You can see one at the following link:

      Dan,

Thanks for the feedback. That's the type of vent cap I was looking for. I'll have to order online or try a local HVAC company.
