  • Amana Smoothtop Cooktop AK2H30

The halogen burners don't heat up on some switch settings. We tried changing both the RF and RR switches and it didn't fix the problem.

** Amana smooth top cooktop [model number] AK2H30 **

On Amana products, in addition to the model number, the MFG (manufacturing number) is also required to identify the specific appliance in question.

** The halogen burners don't heat up on some switch settings. **

They don't heat up *at all* on those settings or they come on but go off prematurely or they only get warm?

    Which *exact* 'settings'?

I take it it's only the elements on the RH side experiencing problems? Do they both act exactly the same? Did they both fail at the same time or one days or weeks before the other??

Amana Smoothtop Cooktop [model number] AK2H30 E4
Is E4 the manufacturing number? The Serial Number is 9801169657

Original Problem: The RF halogen burner didn't get hot at all on settings LO-2-3. The RR halogen burner didn't get hot on LO-2-3, 7 & HI. Since the 2 switches had the same part number, I swapped them and the problem followed the switches, so I replaced both switches.

Now, on the RF burner I can feel no heat on LO, very slight heat on 2 (I can touch the burner with my hand) and a little warmer on 3. Is this normal?

On the RR burner I feel no heat on LO, very slight heat on 2 (I can touch the burner with my hand) and a little warmer on 3. Is this normal? Settings 7 & HI seem to be working now.

I (can hear a hum on all settings.) The burners do not appear to come on and then go off prematurely.

The Dual Radiant Element (RL burner): On the single setting the inner ring gets hot and glows red on L-M-H. On the dual setting the inner ring gets hot and glows red, but the outer ring does not seem to get hot at all or glow red.

No. The manufacturing number will start with the letter "P" like P113157-8 or P1131578N. The E4 is part of the model number which in your case looks to be AK2H30E4

I can't see it being anywhere else if the symptoms moved with the switches.

I wouldn't think so, it should do something on every setting... except off. The only possibility I can think of is maybe the wiring to those switches might be mixed up??

On 10 position switches, the cooktop should use a combination of 120 and 240 volts to generate the different heat settings. If that 120 volt leg was missing, that could account for missing lower temperatures... although I would think it should affect more that just the very lowest setting?

So the outer portion never heats? That could either be caused by the outer element coil defective (requiring replacement of the whole element), a defective switch or maybe just a disconnected wire to the malfunctioning portion or the element. The element should be simple enough to test for continuity to see if it's the problem or not.
