  • Dishwasher lost power mid cycle

    Hi everyone,
I have a problem I was hoping someone could help me with. I recently had my garbage disposal replaced, prior to which my dishwasher was working fine. It is fairly new, although I just bought the house and don't have the warranty information on it.

That night I started the dishwasher and went to bed. When I went to empty the dishes the next day I noticed there was a lot of standing water in the dishwasher; it had somehow lost power mid-cycle. I tested the breakers and the wall switch and they were both on.

I looked at the garbage disposal, thinking that must be the culprit, but the dishwasher doesn't run through the disposal at all. It drains through the second sink. I've read through all of the dishwasher topics and read online that there is a panel that needs to be knocked out in a new disposal. But, in my case, that panel isn't uncovered or hooked to anything so I didn't think that could be cause.

The only thing I could think of is that when the disposal was replaced the sink was plunged in order to clear a jam in the pipes. I thought this may have caused a subsequent clog in the line to the dishwasher. But I've run through all of the pipes to see if a clog may be in another section and I couldn't find anything. I've even checked out the flex hose and everything seems clear. Before I call a repair man I thought I'd see if anyone has any good ideas. I'm stumped as to where to go next.

The dishwasher is an Americana Hotpoint Model ADW1000K00WW

    Thanks!

** there was a lot of standing water in the dishwasher; it had somehow lost power mid-cycle. **

The cycle actually didn't finish or you just assume it didn't because there was water left? Does it operate now (besides the not draining issue)??

** Before I call a repair man I thought I'd see if anyone has any good ideas. **

Assuming it IS running but just not draining, it might be possible to disconnect the dishwasher drain hose and put it into a bucket temporarily to see if the dishwasher drains or not. If it does, you can probably be pretty certain it is something in the house plumbing that is amiss and not a problem in the dishwasher or vise versa.

BTW. The bucket may need to be elevated to above floor level to prevent just syphoning of the water out of the dishwasher.

Sorry, I guess that wasn't very clear. It doesn't have power. I figured it had been interrupted mid-cycle because of the water and also because the dial was only halfway through it's rotation. I still can't get any evidence of power at all. No noises, no whirring, nothing. That's what makes me think it isn't a blockage. Unless dishwashers have some sort of safty mechanism that shuts off power when the bowl can't drain?
      Thanks,

The dishwasher shouldn't be on a wall switch.

Someone will likely need to test to make sure power is actually getting to the dishwasher.

If power IS definitely getting to the dishwasher, a problem in its door switch could stop total operation of the dishwasher but that shouldn't have anything to do with a disposal's installation. There isn't usually any kind of 'fuse', etc., in a GE built dishwasher (like yours) which would blow to stop its operation.

If you are certain the power supply to the dishwasher is Ok, someone will need to check the dishwasher's wiring and components to see where the power stops.
