I have a Waste King SS5000 CODE S (1/2 HORSEPOWER) that runs good for about 5 seconds and then the thermal switch trips. This didn't happen suddenly, the run time has been gradually decreasing over the past six months. There is no blockage and the motor turns ok. Is a thermal switch failure a common problem and can it be replaced?

They fail reasonably frequently, although I don't recall ever hearing of one failing in the way you describe, getting worse over time.
Those protectors are not usually just thermal protectors but also current protectors as well. Has anyone checked the unit's current draw to ensure it is not creeping up and causing the protector to operate as it is designed to, cutting off power to the unit in signs of trouble?
BTW. IF the protector is required, the one used on your model (part # 01-13-913) looks to be discontinued and is no longer available.
JFYI
