  • Maytag Gas Dryer LDG4910AAW Problem !

This dryer is in great shape for a 1993 model and I think worth fixing . It starts up o.k. but it then starts with a sound like metal to metal and after a couple of minutes it shuts itself down. I had it all apart today and cleaned the impellar, housings and vacuumed the interior and used WD40 to lube the rollers, motor shaft, Idler Pulley. The belt looked very good and the only thing I really noticed was even after lube the front shaft on motor still made a little screeching noise when turned by hand . I am trying to decide whether to fix this one or buy Mama a new one. "If Mama not happy, no one's happy " I would appreciate any help with this . Also, I didn't write the motor model down . but, would there be a crossover model from a whirlpool dryer that would work ?

Thank You , and Happy New Year !

WD40 is NOT a lubricant, it shouldn't be used as such. A good wax-free, turbine oil for motor bearings, idler pulleys and such can be found at the following link. It has a 6" retractable spout for getting into tight places.

The motor?? If so, I think you found your problem.

No. You need to get one for that make and model of dryer.

I don't know what you mean by that.

If the dryer motor is squeaking as you stated, worn motor bearings are the most likely cause of the sound in which case the motor is likely defective and needs to be replaced. With worn bearings, the motor could be overheating and cutting out on its internal overload protector, stopping the dryer from running.

might be worth it to check out the felt "bearings" on the front side of the drum. the back side of the drum rides on a ball bearing at its center spider the front just rides on felts around the bottom of the drum. if these are worn the drum will make metal to metal or metal to nylon contact on the supports.

I may be too late with my reply, but....

A few years ago, I had the same metallic screeching sound on my Maytag gas dryer. My husband suggested buying a new one, but a penny-pincher that I am, I got a link on this forum that helped me explore the inside of my dryer. After replacing the worn out blower wheel, the problem was completely resolved. The blower wheel and blower wheel clamp only cost me about $25.
