Garbage disposal spits up when starts

I just installed a Kenmore disposal, but approximately 60% of the time when I turn it on, water/food will spit back out (just initially), at times even shooting a foot or two in the air, which obviously creates a lot of issues. The instructions said this may occur, but I would like to eliminate this problem. The rubber trap has folds in it, so some of "teeth" are up and some are down. I'm tempted to cut slits in the rubber, so they may all fold down. Not sure if that will help?

maybe the rubber was installed upside down....... try turning on the water flow and the disposal BEFORE adding food scraps. the rubber is preformed to direct flow downwards. the hole in the middle should be about 3/4-1"
