garbage disposal repair

I have a disposal that when I turn it on hums but it doesn't spin. I checked to make sure it's not jammed, and it's not. The blades spin freely by hand.

Sounds like the shaft mike be broken. Ever get something stuck in it?

you said the blades spin freely. are you referring to the whole plate or just the SS grinders? The plate is rough in surface much like an automatic potato peeler and is fastened to the shaft by means of a left hand bolt and may be keyed to the shaft or just a taper fit. the motor shaft extends up through the grinder base with a ceramic seal which is spring loaded.
