  • Freezer thaws, fridge freezes

Twice in the last month our GE Profile PSC23MSTD has frozen items in the vegetable crisper drawers while simultaneously thawing the freezer and melting all the ice. It seems to progressivly freeze more vegetables over a 3 or 4 day period before going really bad and melting the ice. Both times it has eventually corrected itself and then worked correctly but this is getting annoying. Yes, the doors are closed when this happens.
A day or 2 before the first episode there was a series of brief voltage drops in the house power (with lights noticably dimming). Could this be related to the problem? As far as we know there were no voltage spikes as surge protectors on other items did not trip.
GE service in our small town cannot get to us for 3 weeks. Any suggestions?

That model number looks incomplete, did you get it right off the appliance's model and serial number identification tag? That is the only reliable place the complete model number will be found.

That is a strange series of events since all the cooling for the whole refrigerator usually takes place in the freezer. If it was unusually warm, the rest of the appliance should usually be too.

    Any suggestions?
You can read about some common possibilities for cooling problems at the following link:

      Model number

The number ends in SS. The refrigerator was purchased at Home Depot a little over a year ago and the model number doesn't seem to match those available at websites to search for parts.

        Canadian?

The closest model I found a listing for was PSC23MSTCSS.

Yours isn't a Canadian model by chance?

It's the mother/main board that's gone bad. My model is PSC23MSTDSS. Had the same problem. paid GE Service folks $340 (Parts & labor) to replace. I'm pissed because my frig is only 4 years old. This is truly an inferior product although it was not bottom of the line. After researching sites like this for more information, I found that this is a problem that many folks have had and GE knows about. Apparently they use cheap motherboards made in China. After I complained to GE they gave me a $50 refund. That was about 2 months ago. Now I have a different problem with the same refrigerator.
