I purchases an electric Maytag Gemini MER6872 dual oven in December 03. The oven has been awesome but recently I have had a problem with the bottom oven. When it is on either bake or convection, the broil element comes on and burns my food. I was baking cookies and had completed 3 or 4 trays when all of a sudden I smelled something burning. Looked in the oven, had black cookies and the broil element was red hot. Shut the oven off, waited a few minutes, hit convection again and the broil element came on. Shut it off again, tried normal bake and the broil element came on. We finally unplugged it, waited about 15 minutes, plugged it back in and it worked fine. But then it happened again, I was preheating the oven on Christmas for my turkey when it happened again. Unplugged it for about 15 minutes, plugged it back in and it worked fine. But then on New Year's Day, I was cooking Yorkshire pudding and the damn broil element came on again when baking and burnt my food. The strange thing is, when I put the broil element on it's own, it doesn't work. The oven stays cold. The upper oven works fine, it is just the bottom broil element that has gone rogue. Anyone have any ideas on what this could be? I would like to have an idea before I call a repairman.

    Thanks in advance,
    Barb

    Model number incomplete

I'm afraid that model number is incomplete. We'd need the whole thing to properly identify the appliance and that will only be found right on the appliance's model and serial number identification tag:

Even after an initial preheat function has been completed?

then it happened again, I was preheating the oven on Christmas for my turkey when it happened again.
The broil element WILL usually be on during a preheat function. But once the set temperature is reached it will most often shut off for the duration or depending on the control, cycle on and off for more even oven temperatures.

The strange thing is, when I put the broil element on it's own, it doesn't work.
I can't think of anything that could cause your symptoms besides a problem in the electronic control itself. If the bake and broil elements were operating reversed, just a wiring problem might have been a slim possibility.

The model number for the stove is MER6872BCB.

The broil element comes on after the initial preheat. The oven would be on bake or convection, working fine and then I would smell the burning and see that the broil element came on and burnt food. It does not happen all the time, just has been happening more frequently in the last week. The oven has been working fine for the last 5 years. It is only recently that I have had this problem.

        Electronic control malfunction?

On that model the broil element IS suppose to be on during the bake but only for 6 seconds out of every minute. The other 54 seconds just the bake element should be on.

The broil element should be powered directly by the range's electronic control so only a 'sticking' relay on that control or a problem in the control's logic should cause your symptom. In either case the electronic control (see the following link) would usually need to be replaced to correct the condition.

Than a simple wiring problem could not be responsible. Sorry.

So even a stuck relay is out of the question?

The oven really acted up today when both the upper and lower ovens were on. It was almost like there was a loss of power to the the whole stove so I shut the lower oven off and the upper oven worked fine.

Additionally, when you are baking the top element (broil) doesn't seem to be coming on at all. Tried the broil on its own in the bottom oven and it doesn't come on at all. Doesn't even get warm.

          Very strange.

I said it WAS a possibility. The relays are an integral part of the electronic control. If a relay was 'sticking' the electronic control board would have to be replaced to correct the problem. The relays of the control are not available separately.

I don't know what would cause that, it would have to be investigated. A malfunctioning electronic control is a possibility.

Maybe the malfunctioning relay responsible for the broil staying ON initially finally failed for good or is sticking in the OFF position now? The element might also have now burnt out although with your previous symptoms I think a control problem is more likely.

The element itself can easily be tested to see if it were good or not (see the following links).
