  • Whirlpool refrigerator ET18HPXHW00 9 yrs old (loud clunking)

    Looking for some advice.

My fridge is a 9 yr old Whirlpool ET18HPXHW00, basic model, (freezer on top).

It always made a slight noise when the compressor shuts off, now it makes a loud god awful noise (clunking) it sounds like someone is knocking at the front door and makes my dogs go nuts.

I've checked the compressor mounting screws but they cant get any tighter.

I have read on other forums that the compressors internal mounting springs are likely shot or loose and there is nothing short of buying a new compressor to fix it.

I am wondering if anyone has any tips to maybe alleviate the clunking so it is not so loud.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer

If the sound is internal to the compressor, that is true.

Only to install sound proofing material around the appliance's enclosure, maybe a carpet beneath. Don't attempt to insulate the compressor itself in any way as that could present a potential fire hazard. Air flow in that area should also not be disturbed.
