  • Frigidaire Washer Stacked Transmission Problem

I have a Frigidaire Washer/Dryer Stacked unit, Model # GLET1031CSO. It's about 2.5 years old. The washer stopped working and there is brownish oil leak at the bottom of the machine. I called a local repair person and he said it’s not worth fixing and since it's an attached stacked unit, I will have to replace both washer and dryer. So I am faced with spending about $1000 for another set. I talked to Lowes appliance sales person, where I bought the machine, and told it will cost $500-$1000 to repair it. I can't get any technical support from Frigidaire. Is it true the machine is practically worthless?

The only place any significant amount of oil can come from on a washer is from the transmission.

If it was just a washer and needed a transmission that might be the case but considering the price of a new laundry center it might not be. If the total repair cost is less then 1/2 the price of a replacement unit, it could very well be worthwhile to repair.

You got a repair estimate from a sales person at Lowes?? I suggest you get a realistic estimate from a Frigidaire factory authorized service depot and then decide for yourself whether the repair is worth it to you after comparing it to the cost of a replacement appliance. I can't see such a repair (if a transmission is all that is required) being anywhere near $1000. Maybe $350-$500 tops... depending on service rates in your area

I can't get any technical support from Frigidaire.
What kind of 'technical support' were you looking for from them??

      Service Manual

      .
BTW. If you are interested in attempting the repair yourself Frigidaire does have a service manual available for their laundry center products (see the following link). It should cover most common repairs.

        Frigidaire Stacked Laundry Center

Thanks, Dan for your assistance. You gave me a realistic idea of what the repair cost may be. I wanted to find out if Frigidaire could tell me what the probable cause for the failure so I can get estimates for repair. After reading your comments, I decided it would be cheaper to get it repaired, otherwise I have to replace the perfectly good dryer. Finely, I was able to talk to the customer service person to find an authorized repair company but Frigidaire didn't have anyone in our area who could repair the machine. They said because it's out of warranty period, they couldn't help. I argued the machine is less than 3 years old and I am having to throw it away. Well after putting me on hold several times to talk to the supervisor, they offered 40% discount on a new machine, same type -stacked laundry center. I told them I will not buy another stacked attached washer/dryer unit because I would be in the same situation if one component breaks down and having no repair service available??? I was planning on buying front loading stackable washer and dryer, two separate units. They said, I can't do that. The offer was for a replacement of the same model. I was quite upset by then. They can't send anyone to repair their ill machine and costing me another $1000 for a new set but not come up with any solution? They finely offered to refund me 40% of the original machine regardless of what I buy to replace it. I figured it's better than nothing even though I just had 60% depreciation on both washer and dryer in less than 3 years. I would never buy another stacked laundry center again.

I assure you you'll find even less people available to repair it. They tend to be complicated to service. It is probably not the best choice if you already suffer from lack of factory service in your area.

BTW. A Frigidaire factory authorized service depot is just the best choice for service on your existing washer. Any company familiar with Frigidaire laundry products could repair it otherwise, they've changed very little over the years. Many homeowners are often even capable of repairing them which is frequently not the case with a front-load washer design.
