  • Over-Range Microwave seems to stop heating when gas range is on

I have a new Maytag microwave (MMV1175JZ) installed in November, and twice now, it seems to stop heating, even though it runs. Both times, the gas range below has been on (burners and oven). Also both times, the microwave works fine for about the first 10 minutes. When it stops heating, the power on the microwave seems to increase, like a fan kicks on. After we turn the burners off and let things "cool down", the microwave seems to operate normally. Also, we haven't had any issues when operating the microwave by itself.

I already have a service call booked with Maytag (3.5 weeks out!) just in case this is an issue, but our previous microwave was at least 16 years old, not sure if this a common thing with newer microwaves. The Maytag manual and their customer support is basically useless.

Has anyone heard of anything like this, or does it sound like a defective microwave oven?

It sounds like you might be dealing with a thermal issue related to the operation of your microwave in conjunction with the gas range below. Here are a few potential explanations and considerations:

    1. **Ventilation and Heat Management**: Microwaves generate a significant amount of heat, and if the area around them gets too hot, they can shut down or reduce functionality to prevent overheating. When the gas burners or oven are running, they generate heat that could be affecting the microwave’s performance. Microwaves typically have a built-in cooling fan to help manage heat, but if the ambient temperature is too high, it might struggle to keep up.

    2. **Airflow and Exhaust**: If your microwave is installed over the range, it might have an exhaust fan or ventilation system that could be compromised by excessive heat from the stove. Ensure that the microwave’s ventilation system is properly installed and not obstructed.

    3. **Safety Features**: Modern microwaves often have safety features that prevent them from operating under certain conditions to avoid damage. If the microwave senses excessive heat or potential overheating conditions, it may temporarily stop heating while the fan continues to run to cool down the internal components.

    4. **Installation Issues**: Ensure that the microwave was installed correctly and that it has adequate clearance around it. Improper installation could affect its performance and cooling efficiency.

    5. **Defective Unit**: While it's possible that the microwave could be defective, it's not the most likely cause given that it operates normally when the stove is off. However, a defect could still be a factor in how it handles heat and ventilation.

Since you have a service call scheduled, that’s a good step. Meanwhile, try to minimize the use of the gas burners or oven while the microwave is running to see if that alleviates the issue. Additionally, check if there are any ventilation issues or obstructions around the microwave.

In summary, it seems most likely that the issue relates to heat management and ventilation rather than a defect in the microwave itself. But a professional technician will be able to provide a definitive diagnosis and solution.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you need any further assistance..
