Maytag fridge stopped running

I have a Maytag MTB1956AE. One day I opened it and both the fridge and freezer were room temp. The lights inside work, but that's it. The fan inside the freezer does not run and the compressor does not turn on. I tried adjusting the temp controls but no response. I unplugged it for a few hours but again there was no response when I plugged it back in.

I don't know much about fridges. What is the likely cause?

Defrost timer or thermostat problem?

The fan inside the freezer does not run and the compressor does not turn on.

That could be due to the defrost timer (see the following link) being in defrost mode, possible 'stuck' there or the thermostat's contacts not closing.

How to manually advance the timer is described at the link above. The thermostat's contacts should be able to be tested for continuity to see if they're closing or not.
