HDMI 2.1 vs DisplayPort 1.4 for Modern TVs

When it comes to modern TVs, is there any real advantage to using HDMI 2.1 over DisplayPort 1.4? I'm just wondering if there's a noticeable difference in picture quality or performance for everyday viewing.

For most everyday use, there isn’t a major difference in picture quality or performance between HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4, especially when using standard resolutions and refresh rates. Both support 4K, HDR, and high data transfer speeds.

That said, HDMI 2.1 does offer some extra features, like higher bandwidth (up to 48 Gbps), support for 4K at 120Hz, and other improvements that can provide better overall performance if the TV and connected devices are designed to take advantage of them. DisplayPort 1.4 is more common in PC setups, while HDMI is the standard on most TVs.

So overall, both are capable, but HDMI 2.1 tends to be the better match for modern TVs and offers a bit more flexibility for future upgrades.

Thanks for the info! What if a TV only has HDMI 2.0, but everything else supports HDMI 2.1? Is it worth upgrading the TV just for that, or are the real benefits of HDMI 2.1 only noticeable in very specific cases?

In most cases, having HDMI 2.0 on the TV isn’t a big drawback unless you're specifically trying to take full advantage of features that require the extra bandwidth. For regular use, the difference is minimal, and HDMI 2.0 still handles 4K content quite well. Unless there’s a specific need that HDMI 2.1 solves, upgrading the TV just for that probably isn’t necessary.
