Troubleshoot Receiver

I have a denon avr-588 receiver that is in protect mode every time i turn it on. Doesn anyone know the best way to troubleshoot electronic equipment. I am assuming that there is a short somewhere causing protect mode everytime it is turned on. I have never tested electronic equipment and was told that i could use a multimeter and possibly find the problem. Anything will help thanks.

Ideally for electronic circuits an audio and frequency generator plus an oscilloscope is used for testing. a meter will test resistors and in some cases capacitors.

Do some searching on componet testing, like transistors. You may find that the power amp transistors are bad, or maybe capacitors. You will need a mutimeter and alot of reading on testing componets
