My college-age son was trying to fix a broken pull-chain light switch in a ceiling fan. Before he disconnected the old, broken switch he didn't note how the wires were configured and now can't figure out how to attach the wires to the new switch. Is there a way I can explain to him how to know which wire goes into the new switch in which order?

that depends on if the light switch increases the brightness with each string pull. normally it is a simple on-off switch connected between the blue wire and the load blue wire. the black is used for the fan motor. -
It's a simple on-off pull switch. But he says there is only a white wire coming from the fan and a black wire (unfortunately he is in another city so I'm not there to see it). It's the idea of a white wire that threw me.Comment

ok, a simple on-off will go between a hot wire [black] and the lamp load [usually blue] in a ceiling fan. under the canopy you will see a blue wire a black wire and a white wire.Comment
