  • 12 v transformer burn out...again

In recent remodeling project, electrician installed TE-12-100 National Specialty Lighting transformer to supply 10 undercabinet "puck" lights. Within 6 months, an "electrical smell" developed when the lights were on, followed in two days by lack of output (checked by me with meter)from transformer. Ordered TE-12-150 as replacement. Checked 120 AC output with meter...OK. Within weeks, same smell and burnout. Any ideas?

I would check the secondary load to make sure it's not drawing more than the VA rate of the transformer.

    Amps X Volts = VA

Check the lamps for their wattage - Total value add em together and divide by their operating voltage - you'll get the amps. All transformers are rated by VA or (volts-amps) Bigger ones are Kva - thousand volt-amps.
For instance - 12 lamps @ 20 watts each equals 240 watts, operating at 28 volts equals 8.57 amps. - A 10 va transformer should be ok.

      12 @ 20w = 240, divided by 12 volts equals 20 amps. A 20 va transformer is suitable.
