  • microwave and garbage disposal on same circuit

I am putting a half kitchen in basement (fridge, sink, and microwave) and is it ok code wise to place a microwave outlet and garbage disposal on same 20 amp breaker? i checked the garbage disposal and it's rated at 4.5 amps. The microwave is 1000 watts, about 8.5 amps.

In total this is 13 amps which well below the safe operating range of a 20 amps circuit.

and yes the microwave outlet is on a GFCI.

Next question is if the above is ok, should the garbage disposal switch take it's feed from the Line or Load side of the microwave GFCI?

Well, here's what the NEC says. All kitchens must have two 20 amp small appliance branch circuits that serve the countertop receptacles. It is ok for the refrigerator to be plugged into one of these circuits. It is also ok for the microwave to be plugged into one of these circuits.

But, it is not ok for a garbage disposal to be connected to either one of these small appliance branch circuits.

Here's a link that'll give you all sorts of details in how to wire your kitchen, it' will include the proper spacing of receptacles and all their requirements. Ask back with any questions.
