  • Outlet not working correctly

    Here is the problem.

I changed out the electrical outlet in the bedroom. The outlet is supposed to work with the light switch in that when you turn on the light switch what you have plugged into the outlet turns on. The problem is that the outlet stays in the on position and the light switch doesn't do anything.

There are five wires. 1 black, 1 red, 2 white, and 1 ground. I bought a regular outlet for this. Is there a special type of outlet for it kinda like a 3-way light switch but for outlets?

Please help. This thing is driving me crazy

most likely, one half of the outlet was switched. Look at the old receptacle.....you will find that a jumper on the brass side is broken off. The black lead was connected to one half=alway hot. The red lead came from the switch and went to the other brass screw. That half of the outlet controlled by the switch.
