I just bought an old house, built in 1945, and I'd like to upgrade the wiring. I realize that I will need a licensced professional for some things, but I want to do most of the work myself. I want to do it right the first time but I don't know what the guidlines are. Could anyone tell me where to find city code books, if they even exist?

contact your building and zoning office, they will tell you what they go by NEC or other.

What do you believe is deficient about your existing wiring?

There are readily available manuals entitled "CODE CHECK" which will give you valuable information that applies universally, but may not address some specific regional compliance.

go to your building department and talk to the electrical inspector about what you wish to do. He is the authority for your city. If there is no inspector then the next in line is a UL approved inspector. every state has at least one.
