  • wiring a GFI outlet to a switch

I could use a little help here. We're trying to wire my whirlpool tub with and additional switch on the electrical outlet to prevent accidental "dry running the pump". Can you add a switch to a GFI by simply inturrupting the hot with the switch and if you do, is the switch protected by the GFI. Thanks

    Lee Ann,

    Welcome to the forum.

Yes you can switch it. If the switch is before the outlet then it is not protected. On the back of the GFCI outlet you will see two sets of connectors to continue the circuit . At one connection it will say that it is GFCI protected (often these are covered with a sticker when you buy it). The other connection would not provide Ground Fault protection.

    Hope this helps, Jim
