  • Laudry Fan Overheating?

Hey All: My laundry exhaust fan gets hot to touch after the completing my work. The fan is in the ceiling of the laundry room (live in a highrise). Does it mean anything? Should I replace it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

does the fan exhaust directly outside or does it feed to a common duct for the rest of the condo? if it feeds directly outside check for a blockage in the 4" duct or maybe the damper won't open. if it is blowing against a closed damper, the motor current will go up putting a strain on the motor. the motor probably is a type called a shaded pole motor. check the bearings as they are oil-lite bronze bearings suspended in a felt self centering bearing block. make sure the felts are soaked with oil.

Thanks Guys! Java, I have cleaned and removed lint but the motor still gets hot to touch. Is that normal?
HayZee, sorry, I am not that intuned with all this jargon and did not understand where to find the felt or the 4 inch duct! Would you mind explaining it to me further? Thanks.

the fan exhausts by way of a four inch round fitting - probably plastic on the unit. quite possibly there is a plastic swing type damper right at the unit. if this don't open then the motor/fan will be blowing against a closed duct. the motor is cooled by what is called "air-over" cooling the fan draws room air over it and cools the motor. I'll see maybe I can draw an example of a shaded pole motor so you'll see what I'm talking about and the bearings.

            Shaded Pole Motor

I tried drawing what you "might" see if you pull apart your fan unit.
