  • Found out stove wired wrong

Just got a new stove, had to replace the 3 prong cord with a 4 prong. Old stove had the white and green wire attached to the same terminal lug. I know this is wrong as the green wire is ground. Old stove would shock (slightly) you when surface element was on. I suspect this was because the wiring was wrong (like this when we bought the house). What other problems would this have caused? Higher then normal electric bill due to sending electricity to ground? Old stove worked no breakers blown.

It is common for ranges to come with the pigtail connected the way you found. on the terminal block there is a jumper strap that goes from the center terminal to chassis ground. the two hots [red-black] go to the two outer terminals. So, its not really wired wrong, just the range is used as a replacement unit for an existing one and three wire pigtails is common. the new code specifies that the center jumper be removed, the white connected here and the green ground goes to the chassis.
