  • I know, I know, Yet another SubPanel Question

    OK - I am nearing the end of my electrical work for my basement and have used the information from this board extensively. Here is where I am at;

    I have purchased a Square D Q SubPanel along with a number of 20A Single Pole and Doble Pole and 15 Amp breakers. The panel itself is a 125A with 12 slots expanded to 24 if you use the 1/2 size breakers.

    The current load as I calculated for the basement is aprox. 60/65Amp as I have included a number of electric baseboard heaters, bathroom, Freezer, Bar/Sink/Refridgerator, and a sump pump.

    I have a 220A service into the home through a Sqaure D Homeline box that sits within 2 feet of the subpanel. There is only one free slot in this box so I will need to move some items in order to make room for the sub-panel breaker.

    The question I have is the service entrance cable and the size of the breaker to feed the subpanel. (I have been told to go with the 100A Breaker with a 4/4/4 copper) - as I would rather stay away from aluminum wiring.

    Thanks again for the help and assistance.

    Since this is a subpanel, you will have to use #3 copper THHN in conduit or #2 copper if using NM type cable. You will need three conductors at that size and a #8 grounding conductor to wire the subpanel. Remember, the neutral bar must be isolated in the subpanel, separate from the ground bar, and the ground bar must be bonded to the panel.

      thanks

      Thanks for the information - appreciated.

      Do you think the 100A Breaker for my basement is overkill or good thinking down the line?
