GFCI tests open ground

I used a receptacle tester and my GFCI's all test open ground. Is this normal? I have several regular receptacles connected to one GFCI and they all test open ground also.
I'm assuming that since you can install a GFCI on a circuit with no ground wire that this would be normal.

GFCIs when used as a replacement in existing "ungrounded" systems will work. They measure the imbalance from input to output, that is amps in on black to amps out on white. The equipment "ground" is for short circuit and leakage to ground faults. A standard receptacle tester will read an open ground. Leviton makes a plug in GFCI tester that simulates a leakage path at about 5 - 6 ma before it trips.

Just last year I learned another unknown (to me) tidbit about GFCI outlets; they have a small amount of voltage "leaking" through even after they have been tripped, thus my test light was still glowing
