  • Red wire in lighting fixture

I installed several new lighting fixtures in my house where ceiling fans used to be. I connect the black to black, white to white, and ground wire to the gound nut. But there was also a red wire that was not included with the light fixture. So I just capped it.

The light switch works fine. just want to make sure that I'm not causing my self any problems or safety hazards.

When wiring a ceiling fan, it is common to run a 14-3 NM cable from the switch(s) to the fan.

    A 14-3 has 2 hots (black and red), a neutral(white), and a ground(copper).

The reason 14-3 is run rather than 14-2 is so that the fan and light can be controlled from separate switches on the wall.

If you are replacing a ceiling fan with a luminaire, all you need is one hot, in your case, the black. The red can be capped off as you have done, but you may be left with a wall switch that no longer controls anything.

Its probably a lead to hook up another light to it on the same switch.
