  • Need Help Ceiling Fan Problems

    Good Evening,

I am replacing my existing ceiling fan with a new one. However, I can only run either the fan or the light. Not both at the same time. what did I do wrong?

With the light switch turned on, the lights power up and the fan shuts off. If I flip the light switch off. The fan will start up.

Wires coming from my ceiling: 3 black all wound together, 1 white, and 1 white with electrical tape wrapped around part of it.

Wires from the ceiling fan: 1 white, 1 black, 1 blue.

I followed the instructions that came with the fan which told me to put the blacks and blue together and white to white and that constantly blew a fuse.

I then attached the black to black, white to white, and the blue to the white with the electrical tape wrapped around it. With this setup I get the results like I have now (listed above).

    Please help.

    Thanks!!!! =)

did your old fan have a remote control? normal wiring to a fan is black - motor, white - all neutrals, blue - lights. your existing ceiling wiring denotes a hot and neutral, a black downfeed to something else, another neutral [downstream] a black two wire to a switch with the return leg white [taped] so, connect all blacks together, [not the black and blue from the fan] splice the fan black to blue and then to the taped white. all whites together [inluding the white from the fan.]

Thank you very much. I'll give that a try. =)

No, my old fan did not use a remote. This new one does not as well.
