  • Removing Tile and Backer

    All,

I am looking at replacing tile in my kitchen, bathroom, pantry and laundry room. My question is, when i remove the tile, do I need to remove the backer as well, or can I tile over the old backer?

Reading a lot of conflicting things online.

    Many thanks

    tile backing board

what's the condition of the backer board? good shape? springy? looks waterlogged? tight to the subfloor and/or joists?

It all depends on the quality of the remaining backer board, if it's screwed down, mudded down, chunks missing from tile removal ?
Little about a lot and a lot about a little.

Appreciate the responses. I couldn't take up just the tile, so its taking up the tile and backer. Bigger job but is what it is.
