The stairs going to my basement bedroom have always been carpeted because they are just two-bys. The stair well is walled on both sides so edges aren't an issue. Is there a product that I can just scab over the existing 2 bys? I'm looking for the new hard wood stairs look.

The simple answer is no, the issue isn't covering the top of the 2x's it's the covering the nose, all stair tread covers will have a built in nose. Plus the first step will increase in height 3/4" in relation to the basement floor. (all other steps (except the top) will stay equal.
It's not that big a deal to remove the 2x material and simply add stair treads of your choice material.Little about a lot and a lot about a little.
Every day is a learning day.
