First things first
This all depends, are these carpeted steps? Thus meaning you can't see the wood? If so, te first thing is to pull the carpet, but, doing so will cause it to need stretching, then, lok for nail heads that are not all the way in. If you find that, you can pull that nail and replace it with a good strong deck screw. Also, wherever you see the nails, add a few screws to the squeeky steps. That is the quick method.Originally posted by hawwger View PostHow do I stop 100 year old oak stairs from squeeaking?
If these steps don't help, it could be a more difficult issue. Sometimes, due to the home settling, traffic, etc., the boards will be rubbing against each other, and may need to be pulled, glued, and screwed. In some cases the wood has gotten weak and may need to be replaced, this is rare.
I hope this helps.
