    Flooring Problem

Hello, I've just pulled up wall to wall carpeting in my house. Under the foam padding there is doubled sided tape stuck to the oak flooring. It has been down for 25+ yrs. What can I use to remove the tape without damaging the floors??? Would a heat gun work with careful scraping, or is there a product I can buy that would help remove the tape and adhesive without stripping off the floor finish. Don't know why the tape was put down when the foam padding was stapled to the flooring. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx
