    Carpet over ceramic tile??

Hi. My wife and I bought a house a couple of years ago that has ceramic tile in the living room. Well, the wife decides she hates tile in the living room and wants to replace it with carpet. Has anyone installed carpet over ceramic, and how does it look a few years down the road? Would we need to put some kind of a subfloor on top of the tile, or would a good pad do the trick? I don't want to add any more height than I have to.

We have an area rug, but apparently that's not good enough.

OK, look, the tile is set upon a non flexing surface, subfloor, whatever. Don't make an awful mess and rip up the tile. Believe me, it'll be a real mess to clean up. Find the best resilient pad around and use this for a base. Being somewhat rubber based, it won't slide around on the tile, and still would provide a cushion for your carpet. The pad, being around 3/8 inch won't compress much and your pile, say around 1 inch or less makes the total about a 1 1/4 amount to cut off door bottoms.
