I would like to remove floor tile layed over hardboard. What is the best way to do this without renting a machine?

    Dee,

I good sharp scraper, time, maybe a heat gun and lots of elbow grease.

    Good luck, Jim

Is using a heat gun safe on mastic? I've heard it can emit toxic fumes.

I am not sure of that, but if you are going to put some other finish material over the floor once you get the tiles up, try using a flat shovel by getting under the edges of the tiles and prying or monkey bar... they should pop up relatively easily.
