  • Protect Hardwood Floors: Simple DIY Tips

Hi everyone, here are some easy DIY tips to keep your hardwood floors scratch- and dent-free:
    • Put felt pads under furniture legs to stop scratches when moving things around.
    • Use area rugs or runners in busy spots to protect the floor from wear.
    • Avoid walking on hardwood floors with high heels or heavy boots to prevent dents.
    • Clean with a microfiber mop or damp cloth and avoid harsh chemicals and too much water.
    • Wipe up spills right away to prevent stains and dents.

These simple steps really help your floors stay looking great without much effort!

Thanks for sharing these tips! What’s generally considered the best material for felt pads?

Wool felt is generally considered the best material for felt pads. It's dense, durable, and holds up really well over time, especially under heavy furniture. Synthetic or polyester felt pads are a more budget-friendly option and work fine for lighter pieces, but they do tend to wear out or compress faster. For things like chairs that get moved a lot, I’d recommend the nail-in style instead of the stick-on ones since they stay in place much better.

Thanks! Do nail-in felt pads work well on all types of furniture legs, or are there certain cases where stick-on ones are a better choice?

Nail-in felt pads work best on solid wooden furniture legs where there's enough thickness for the nail to go in securely. They're great for chairs, tables, and sofas that get moved often because they stay in place much better than stick-on ones.

However, for metal legs, very thin legs, or furniture with hollow or delicate bases, stick-on pads are usually a better choice. In those cases, trying to hammer in a nail could damage the leg or just not hold well. Just make sure to clean the surface before applying stick-on pads so they adhere properly and last longer.

Nice tips! Just wondering though, doesn’t putting rugs or runners over hardwood kind of hide the beauty of the floor?
