  • York 90+ problem

My York furnace will fire up in required sequence up to the point blower motor needs to start. At that time, the motor either hums or if it does get going on its own, or starts on own and doesn't seem to get up to speed. If it doesn't start, I can reach in and help it start. Also noted that I can start motor in either direction. In either case, the rest of sequence aborts and I am getting no heat. I am getting a 4 flash error code on panel board which refers to High limit switch open. I have checked switch and it is normally closed and opens up at approximately 130 degrees F. Board error code also says "blower motor fault".Checked run capacitor on blower and it checks infinite on Mf scale. Am I barking up right tree or left field?I suppose if I replace cap, it will be much cheaper than new motor at $180 + bucks. HELP!!! Getting cold here.

    blower motor

check the start capacitor. by you saying that you can spin it up in either direction indicates THAT capacitor. if you do replace the start capacitor, get one with the same voltage and the same or slightly higher microfarad rating.

      Found problem

Got impatient waiting for response. Took the cheap route and replaced the run capacitor on the blower motor and it cured problem. You were right in your answer. Thank you for your help. I finally got a good read on my meter and it was 2580 Mf. Little on the high side!

        capacitor

a capacitor is difficult to read with a digital meter unless its circuitry is specifically for capacitors. an analog meter works by charging the plates in one direction and when the test leads are reversed, the capacitor discharges through the meter movement and re-charges in the other direction. this indication charge and discharge proves the cap is good. a reading that goes upscale and sits there means the cap is bad.
