  • High efficiency furnace installation

    Hello again everyone,

I have decided to go ahead and just replace my old furnace instead of attempting to repair it. I have made peace with the fact that I am going to have to cut a 5" hole in my exterior wall for the new concentric venting. I think the issue that is stressing me out the most right now is that I have been told that my current vent setup that combines the hot water tank with the existing furnace, then runs up to the roof might be oversized for the hot water tank once the old furnace is taken out.

I am a little confused by this, because what happens when the furnace is off in the summer, and just the hot water tank is in use? If the main duct is oversized for just the hot water tank, wouldn't I have issues of flue gases coming back in the house when the furnace isn't in use and the water tank is on? I would have thought that just capping the duct going to the old furnace would be fine.

    Has anyone encountered this?

    Thanks for any help.

When removing your old furnace from an existing shared chimney, it will be necessary to run a 3" chimney liner. The theory behind it is the water heater will not keep the chimney warm enough by itself during the winter which could cause condensation.
