  • Splitting forced hot air heat into two zones

I'm a new homeowner with a forced hot air furnace. New home ia a colonial with four bedrooms upstairs. The home is currently heated with one thermostat for the entire home. Wondering if it is feasible to have the system split such that heat can be controlled to heat the bedrooms on the second floor with a thermostat, i.e. be able to heat each floor independently ?

Can this be done by making modifications only in the unfinished basement?

Should have been done when the system went in. You would have to change all the duct work now. Can try and close some of the registers a little on the upstairs in winter and open them for summer. Close the down registers some in the summer. Also let the blower run 24/7 helps You dont say how big the home is. lots of times its better to put two systems in, one for up and other for down

Actually, there are other options out there to give you more even control over the temps in your home.

You may be a candidate for a "zoned" system. Check into "arzel" zoning systems. This is where individual dampers are installed into the trunk lines OR into each individual run and are coordinated to open and close so that you can heat OR cool different parts of the home independently from one HVAC unit.

They are costly. But depending on how long you plan to stay in the home, how important comfort is to you, and a whole list of other factors... you will have to make that choice.

Another option is a second unit.

Check with a local contractor and I'm sure one of them will be famililar with both of these options.

      Hope this helps.
