Help. I just bought a new programable thermostat and this one requires an external power source. The old one was a LUXPRO that only used 4 wires. This one needs a "C" wire. I have 2 other wires not being used by the thermostat now. One is Brown and the other is blue. Are either of these the "c" wire? If so is it logical that it is wired correctly in the furnace which is a RUDD 80%.

If you have a multimeter check for the presence of 24 volts at any two pair at the thermostat location. Radio Shack has a few inexpensive meters that will do the job for you. Check the wiring at the furnace - look for a 24 volt step down transformer at the furnace. You may have to purchase a 24 volt transformer and wire it into a hot at all times circuit off the furnace. Check the color coding at the "stat" and look for a duplicate complement at the furnace. Two wires must go to the two TH-TH terminals at the gas controller or lockout relay. The other two could be used for power in.

Take the blue or brown and find them down in the furnace take just one and put it on the Common wire down in the furnace or off the transformer common and put it on the C on the tstat
