  • New AC unit problems

    Hello!

We recently moved into a new home 2 months ago and have been experiencing problems with our upstairs ac unit. The first time it was not cooling, the techs said it had no freon. We didn't have problems again until yesterday. The fan would run but it was blowing out hot air. The white drip pipe was not pouring out tons of water (as we had been warned could happen if there was a huge problem), and the unit in the attic was warm to the touch (the other one for downstairs was cool). The breakers were not thrown. The tech came out this morning and said everything was working properly but the compressor just needed more power to start, so he added a "hard start kit." My question for you is: is this okay?? Should we be concerned that we need a "hard start kit" for a 2 month old compressor? And if we should be concerned, what should we do?

    Thanks!!

No, there are actually manufactures that include a hard start kit, and some recommend them straight out of the box. A compressor requires a lot of torque to start and the hard start kit give it more starting power. The hard start kit is actually a capacitor and potential relay combination. I would worry however about the lack of refrigerant in the system before. Is this a custom home, an existing home, a tract home, is the home new to you, or just built, if new when was the home finished. You don't just lose freon and the condensers are shipped with enough refrigerant for the condenser and at least part of the refrigerant lines. Lack of refrigerant is likely a concern because it could mean there is a leak in one of the components or refrigerant lines. Ask the servicing company to show you where the leak was and their repair and have them note that on an invoice.

kasler, what lonestar says is true and like he said have the repairman note on the ticket exactly what the problem was and his fix for it. From what you said the home is new so warranties will apply but, YOU MUSTA HAVA PROOFA.

Your are what you eat so, eat everything you like.
