  • How can a hurricane break an A/C?

We just went through Wilma this morning, luckily the damage was minimal. A few shingles, part of the pool cage and a couple small trees.

But this afternoon we noticed one of the AC units is not working. The fan is blowing but no cool air. The fan on the unit outside is not turning, and I don't think the compressor(?) is running. There is just a loud hum coming from the unit.

We never lost power for any length of time, but had multiple power surges where the power went on and off. Could this have caused a problem, or was it just bad timing??

    Thanks in advance,

    Joe

lots of water, and or power surges can cause problems! glad you are safe, contacts, or cap would be suspect.

Thanks 2Story. Waiting on an adjuster to visit, and see what he has to say. I appreciate the input and well wishes.

      regards,

      Joe

Check your breakers - if you had some surges, it could have tripped the breaker

WE've had Ivan, Arliene, and Dennis during the past year.... If you live near the coast, like we do, be sure and rinse off your outside unit with plenty of fresh water. That is, after you get it up and running. There is a lot of salt in that wind.....

            Thanks Brandon

Yea, I checked. There is a hum coming from the unit, I think from the fan, and that's it. Nothing else seems to be working.

The compressor isn't running and the fan motor isn't running, but you hear a humming coming from the unit, i would say you most likely have a bad capasitor on the system, it's a cheap part to replace and the most overlooked.
