  • Gas Furnace Pilot Light

I had the gas company turn on my gas and they lite the pilot light. It was kind of warm outside the day he came out and turned it on. So I turned the heat off and turned the AC on and it knocked out the pilot light. I tryed lighting it myself and as soon as I let go of the knob to turn it from 'PILOT' to 'ON' it would go out. I was finally able to get it to stay on but when I turned the thermostat to ON from AUTO it knocked the pilot light out again. I tryed lighting it again and it wount stay lite when I turn it to the knob to the ON position.

Does anyone know what might be happening that it keeps knocking the pilot out? Or anything that I can try to get it to work. Thanks for any help you guys can help me with.

Sounds to me like either the pilot flame is weak.. ( not enough air, or low gas pressure)... OR the thermocouple / thermopile is going or is on its way out..
Check first to see if the pilot flame is at least burning BLUE.... If there is any yellow in it, its not burning hot enough.
If that appears OK you should check the output of the thermocouple / thermopile.... Should be somewhere around 500 - 750 millivolts when its hot... if not it could be weak.

HOPEFULLY, you do not have a severe problem such as a crack in the heat exchanger where its allowing combustion gasses into your house, and allowing house air to be blown into the combustion side of the furnace ( blowing out the pilot possibly)... if so, probably time to bite the bullet and replace the furnace!
