  • Weil Mclain bolier furnace with loud rattle

    Posted Nov 07, 2005 05:49 AM
I have a very old Weil McClain boiler furnace that is making this extremely loud rattle/vibrating noise when I turn it on. It is continuous and does not stop until I get nervous and turn it off.

It was working fine 2 days ago, now it has the rattle. It is not the boiler itself but maybe the circulator or another part, or air in the pipes?

I had it rebuilt 3 years ago. Does anyone know what the noise is, is it dangerous, and can I fix it myself? If it is a DIY project where can I find what parts it needs and instructions?

    Thanks!

You have a B & G red circulator pump on the system, i think 100 series, there is a coupler that hooks the motor to the bearing assembly of the pump, when it fails and breaks it could sound like the house is coming down, it not dangerous , just loud. if you shine a light into the middle of the pump you should see metal debris and 2 springs, to make sure that is it, turn the power off to the system, disconnect the two wires on the pump and tape them up and start the boiler, if it is quit and running, you need a new coupler.
