  • Replaced Thermostat

I just replaced a Honeywell CT87B Round Thermostat.
4 Wire for Gas Heat + AC

The heat is clicking on but not the AC

Also it says Jumper RH to RC - I have no idea what " jumper" means.

    Wires I have connected are Y W G RH

I didnt notice anything being jumpered on the old thermostat ..also there is only one screw marked G and my old one had B G and to me the dark colored wire looks more blue than green ( but its hard to tell actually)

    So what does Jumper mean.
If I do this, will this cause the AC to come on ?

lso it says Jumper RH to RC - I have no idea what " jumper" means.
That means put a small wire from on to the other Like RC to RH .This will let the cool come on.

that will make the heat and cool have the R wire to them like
You have heat now cause you have the RH to W

      Thank You

This is my first house, and although I know a lot about quite a bit about other things, this electrical stuff is totally new to me.

So my red faced question is.. what kind of wire ? Just a piece of copper wire ? And where to I get that ? Can you just buy a small amount like at Home Depot etc ?

I was pretty proud the heat even clicked on LOL

you need to use 18GA Thermostat wire. Probably the easiest thing to do is see if there is enough length on your existing thermostat wire and if there is simply snip a bit off, wire RH and RC together, then put the red wire from the furnace back on in either the RH or RC terminals. This should solve your problems

One more thing - make sure that you either unplug the furnace or turn the power off to it, otherwise you could end up with other problems.

I figured out that solution after reading your prior post.

The only thing is.. all the wires come out of the wall jointly in
a black ( insert tech term) casing. There is just one " cable" (or whatever) that comes out from the wall, and you cant yank one particular colored wire out a little further, than the others.

So then would places like Lowe's or Home Depot carry this 18GA Thermostat Wire, or do I need to go to a H/AC Company ?

Yes, Home Depot will have it, but probably not in a small amount. How much of the "casing" will come out of the wall? If you have enough, split the casing a bit more and then do as posted previously.

Most of the time if it calls for a jumper. We just strip the red wirelong so it can just go on say the RC and right over to the RH.

I just wanted to thank you so much for your instant help ! This is a fantastic forum. I posted it on my music discussion board that I talk on all the time, so more people will know about it.

I had to go to Lowe's Building Supplies today. I asked the salesguy if he had 18 GA Thermostat wire. Played the proverbial "damsel in distress". He gave me this brown wire.

I said, " Oh but I need a red one."

So he stripped it and pulled out a bit of the red wire.

I said, I just need a bit for a jumper, so he cut/stripped the ends and gave me the tiny piece of wire for free.

I thought it was worth a shot, as long as I was there anyway. I actually was a "damsel in distress", so it wasnt too hard to play the part LOL

                Thanks again

                I shall return !
