im helping out my 70 year old father inlaw by replacing his h/w boiler, cracked heat exchanger.i replaced my own 3 years ago and i didnt have to worry about cost.i put shot off valves for everything.both sides of pumps, main supply, return, etc. what is the best way to install using the minimum amount of shut off valves ? can i just put shut off`s on the the main supply and return ? ball valves are expensive for 1-1/4 inch but i only need 2.should i just install gate valves and if so are the 2 on tha mains enough or should i valve each of the 3 zones ? thans for the input.i cant get ahold of my plumbing friend and i need to replace this asap.thanks

all you need to shut off and have valves on are the make-up water supply and the expansion tank, there is no need for shut off's on the supply and return mains, there only handy if you need to replace a pump or relief valve down the road and you don't want to drain the whole system down. you said there are 3 zones, do you bleed them from the baseboards or radiators? or is it a purge system you force bleed thru the boiler, these will all come into affect with your installation.

thanks for the reply.i ended up using chek-trols.there a pump flange with valves and back checks already assembled.price wasnt bad either.as for venting, the old system has air vents on the top floor and one at the boiler,he has always had no heat air problems on the 2nd floor.on my boiler when i installed it,i used a spiral vent at the boiler and nothing on the top floor and have never had a problem with venting so i got one of those too.anyway thanks again.

You have to have a shut off on the expansion tank of the system, they will all eventually flood, or get too full, with out a shut off on the system for the tank how would you isolate it to drain it and refill it slow to allow it ot pressurize? Unless it is a extrol tank with a air blatter in it already

It's been many years since i have installed a household package boiler, in commerical and industrial apps we don't use em , but when i was younger and doing resi systems i remember the diaphrams failing alot, i think they were charged with 12 lbs? And i think that was when they first came out with the extrol tank, Mid 80's? Apprentice you guy's use them alot and if so do they hold up well, or are they still trouble some? I have an old boiler at a house i rent, i have fixed leaks the expansion tank twice, i was going to install a new steel one, i would like to know what your take is on them extrol tanks and if you have many problems, it much cheaper than a steel one and easier to install, but if they fail every year or two it's not worth it to me
Let me know
thanks
