vertical to horizontal

Two questions really, 1- tempstar guys say this unit can be intalled horizontal (only can be done by a certified tempsstar tech) My plumber friend say's to just lay it down,patch the side return and cut new hole in back for the return. Is this all? what about the flue? Can it stay whee it is?
2- The furnace my friend wants to use is used and is 50,000 btu's (1,600 cfm?) I only need about 700cfm. Can I oversize each supply by one size to get rid of the extra air? I know the furnace is too big but this is what he wants to use.

How is the combustion chamber arranged? If there's extra metal atop the chamber, putting it horizontal will put weak metal on top and you'll burn it out quicker. Air flow is air flow top - side bottom shouldn't matter. The squirrel cage blower sucks air wherever it can.

You can't draw return from the back off any forced air furnace, but in your case if you want to lose alot of air that would be the way to do it. The furnace is designed to draw from bottom, right or left only, the back has no opening for enough air to get by, it is blocked by the blower cage.
And like the Mod said, it could burn up bad if it is not made to run horizontal, and normal Multi postion furnace take a little changing like moving the inducer and sometimes the heat exchanger, look for installation instructions on line for that machine.
