Help with getting the warm air rise to 1st floor

hi,

I recently installed a pellet stove in my basement. The temperature
in the basement gets to 80 but still the warm air does not
rise to the first floor (temp upstairs is 67). I leave the door open near the steps going down to the basement and the stove is nearly
located on the buttom of the steps. I would love to see
the warm air comes up the steps so it can warm our cold
kitchen. If i have to add vent registers, how many would
you recommend to add and will the warm air comes up
through the registers and not the stairs door opening? If I open
a window or a door open in our basement, would that pushes
the hot air up? I am lost , I always thought heat rises...

I had a wood burner in the basement connected to the regular furnace. Although the heat from the burner airchamber went directly into the duct work, there was a tremendous amount of radiant heat that was dumped to the basement. It too was near the bottom of the stairs. What was interesting was that besides the basement now being warm and comfy, the floor upstairs was warm. Almost as if there was radiant floor piping! It was harder to detect, but it was definately there. I'm wondering if maybe yuo have some heat loss in the basement walls that may be sucking the BTU's from the air. If yuo have bare walls, temporarily cover them with the cheap thin plastic drop cloth sheets. That will tell you if there's any air leaks, too, just by watching how much the plastic will billow out in certain places and not others.

heat naturally rises so at the highest point on your house you need to create a path the heat will follow - open a window slightly on the second floor. It is possible that if your house is sufficiently insulated that the heat will "stratify" at different levels. I have a pot bellied coal stove on my first floor. I have several through the floor registers feeding warm air to the second floor. without a window cracked the air stays near the floor on the second floor. Open a window and the second floor is as warm as the first floor.
